Most of the sprawling layouts that are seen today can fit in a games room easily although some houses come with a designated space for this purpose. Some locations that score over the rest are basements, spare garages or large rooms on an exclusive level of the house. An atrium will also do provided there is no objection to the noise level. Once the location is decided, the theme of the games room becomes the next decisive factor. You may want a typical English pub atmosphere with darts board and a pool table. Or it can be every kid's dream theme with arcade games and neon signboards. A games room for a family of adults may have the ultimate casino theme with felt lined tables for lively games of poker, blackjack and roulette. The theme can also be a sporty one with posters and sports memorabilia dotting the room. The possibilities become easier when you decide the games that you may want here. Board games, cards table, pool table, table tennis, video games, basketball hoop, darts board or foosball table can keep the family and friends entertained for hours. For tiny tots, you may want to include an indoor climbing tower, slide, seesaw or a colourful rocking horse.
Decor
The ambience needs to be bright and airy for quality time. Depending on the theme, appropriate colours follow suit. For a children friendly theme, bright colours are better on the walls. You may even assign specific areas for different games and make the areas standout with different decor. This can be done with the help of props like wall posters, vinyl decals, area rugs or the lighting. Ambient lighting must be bright and cheerful. Specific task lights over snooker or cards table will be required. A retro feel maybe had with bright neon signboards and maybe a jukebox. Make sure that there are adequate plug points and the wiring is covered.
Furniture
Games specific furniture is important and necessary. For instance, a casino themed games room will require tables with chip wells and cup holders. Similarly, a snooker table will require sturdy cue racks. Generally, a round or an octagonal table is suitable for poker or board games. An extra table that will seat two or four players is useful to have as a spare or when there are fewer people. Comfortable armchairs of quality upholstery for a board games table are appropriate. Those who prefer other amenities in here may want some plush sofas and a few beanbags to lounge while watching television. Bright stackable cubes are a good idea in a modern theme for adding colour and extra seating. Apart from seating, storage cabinets for games paraphernalia are useful. One amenity that is good to have here is a well-equipped mini bar area that will include a bar refrigerator, sink, water dispenser and a microwave. And of course, swivel bar stools to while away your time
