Paintings are a great way to spruce up your walls. Be it reproductions of masterpieces or selfmade works of art, paintings add character to a room and often, tell a story. There is art involved in how you display paintings on a wall. The arrangement plays an important role because it can change the entire look of a room. It can make a room look larger or smaller, sunnier or darker, sophisticated or bohemian.
Before getting started on hanging your wall art, it's necessary to pick out the right kind of art. Visit an art gallery and see which colours complement each other and blend well together. Notice the arrangement of paintings and determine which hues and shades are most eyecatching and which of those impress you the most. Another vital factor to be considered is the colour on your wall. The lighter your wall colour, the more accommodating it will be to different kinds of paintings.

Basics
Once you've decided on the kind of paintings, there are certain rules you want to keep in mind. Firstly, the centre of the painting should be between 50" to 60" from the ground. The more you stick to this rule, the more balanced your room will look. Secondly, when you hang a painting above a couch, fill up two thirds of the wall over the couch. Larger paintings look good here. Leave 5" to 10" gap between the top of the couch and the bottom of the painting. Thirdly, no painting should be so large that it overwhelms the wall and no painting should be so small that it gets lost on the wall. Lastly, do not crowd a wall with too many paintings. More than five is too much. With these basic rules in place, you can play around and find your own style.

Patterns

You can experiment with various interesting patterns to hang your paintings. While it is often said that paintings should be at eye level, there are times when this does not apply. Paintings facing your couch can be slightly lower. The ones on the side walls could be just above eye level. Determine where your eyes focus on the wall most often and display your paintings there.
Grouping paintings on a large wall is a great way to create an interesting focal point. Balance plays an important role in this kind of arrangement. If you hang two medium-sized paintings on one side, use three smaller paintings on the other side. Arrange and rearrange them to strike the right balance.
Paintings that are equidistant to one another and are hung in a straight line, work for a small space. Edge-toedge is a popular pattern that looks best along staircases. Sometimes, random patterns work wonders. Create a collage with paintings that complement one another or tell a story with a series of paintings by hanging them accordingly. Hanging one mediumsized painting and several small ones around it makes an interesting pattern, more so if the paintings are related in terms of subject matter. If you own a large-sized piece, hang it alone. Big paintings are meant to be used as standalones. Hang just one painting on a wall that has furniture against it. On a bare wall, go for more.
Use lighting that flatters each painting, and make sure there's no glare from the lights. A sure-shot way to know whether or not a painting looks good in its assigned place is to trust your instinct. Does it feel right? If yes, then let it be where it is, even if it does not satisfy the basic rules. If not, then move it until you know it looks right
